Intellectual Property of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri

Dr Hassan Mohi-ud Din Qadri

1. The Intellectual Legacy and Academia

All great leaders of the world are also intellectuals at the same time, leading their people and the world at large towards a better future. The spiritual, religious and political leaders and reformers like Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri hold this station with distinction. Besides endowment of the infused wisdom by the Prudent Divine, he inherited the faculty of intellect from his scholarly father. Born in 1951, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri was groomed into a brainy student of Islamic sciences by his learned father Dr Farid-ud-Din Qadri who was an exceptionally eloquent speaker and a top-notch religious scholar, especially inclined towards mysticism and spiritualism. He had received his spiritual orientation from al-Naqib al-Ashraf Ibrahim Sayf-ud-Din Gilani at Baghdad. He imbibed knowledge from Faqih-e-Azam Mawlana Muhammad Yousaf Sialkoti, Muhaddith-e-Azam Mawlana Sardar Ahamad and Mawlana Sayeed Ahmad Qadri. In addition to these venerated religious figures, he acquired further knowledge from the eminent scholars of Baghdad and Damascus. He was especially indoctrinated by Shaykh Muhammad al-Makki al-Kittani about the teachings of al-Shaykh al-Akbar. He immensely added to his understanding of hadith through his association with Mawlana Abdul Shakoor al-Muhajir al-Madani at Medina. Over the years, he transferred this legacy to his brilliant son.

Dr Farid-ud-Din Qadri took his bright son to Medina at the age of 12 for his formal religious education in Madrasa al-'Ulum al-Shar'iyya. It was a traditional school situated in the blessed house of the Companion of the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him), Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be well pleased with him). He completed the traditional studies of classical and Arabic sciences under the tutelage of his father and other eminent scholars of the time. He continued to travel around the Islamic world in the pursuit of sacred knowledge, and studied under many famous scholars of Mecca, Medina, Syria, Baghdad, Lebanon, the Maghreb, India and Pakistan, and received around five hundred authorities and chains of transmission from them in hadith and classical Islamic and spiritual sciences. Amongst them is an unprecedented, unique and highly honoured chain of authority which connects him, through four teachers, to al-Shaykh 'Abd al-Razzaq, the son of Sayyiduna al-Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Husayni (of Baghdad), al-Shaykh al-Akbar Muhyi al-Din b. 'Arabi [(the author of The Meccan Conquests) Damascus] and Imam Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, the great hadith authority of Egypt. Through another chain he is linked to Imam Yusuf b. Isma'il al-Nabhani directly via only one teacher. His chains of transmission are published in two of his detailed lists-thabts: Rare Pearls of Pure Chains (al-Jawahir al-Bahira fi al-Asanid al-Tahira) and The Gifted Dawn of Dazzling Chains (al-Subul al-Wahabiyya fi al-Asanid al-Dhahabiyya).

In the academic sphere, Dr Qadri received a First Class Honours Degree from the University of the Punjab in 1970. After earning his MA in Islamic studies with University Gold Medal in 1972 and achieving his LLB in 1974, Dr Qadri began to practise law in the district courts of Jhang. He moved to Lahore in 1978 and joined the University of the Punjab as a lecturer in law and completed his doctorate in Islamic Law. He was later appointed as a professor of Islamic Law and was head of the department of Islamic legislation for LLM. He was also a member of the Syndicate, Senate and Academic Council of the University of the Punjab, which are the highest executive, administrative and academic bodies of the University.

2. Founding the Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI)

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri founded Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI) on 17th October 1980. A Pakistan-based international organization, the MQI is working to promote peace, tolerance, interfaith harmony and education, tackle extremism and terrorism, engage with young Muslims for religious moderation, promote women's rights, development and empowerment, and provide social welfare and promotion of human rights.

In order to promote and propagate true Islamic teachings and philosophy, revive Islamic sciences, and execute moral and spiritual uplift of Muslim Umma, it is vigorously pursuing its well-defined objectives and spreading its comprehensive and all-encompassing sphere of activity. Advancing the cause of welfare, education, promotion of love culture and spiritual uplift all over the world, it is probably one of the largest non-political, non-sectarian non-governmental organizations in the world. Since its establishment, it has rapidly grown and, within less than 40 years, its organizational network has expanded to more than 90 countries worldwide. The driving force behind this miraculous performance is the intellectual dynamism of Shaykh-ul-Islam.

3. The Exalted Intellectual Work of Devising the Major Objectives of MQI

While formulating the aims and objectives of MQI, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri brooded over the Qur'an and Sunna, employed all his acquired and infused knowledge and the capabilities of head and heart to devise an all-inclusive plan to establish the Islamic system of life for the dawn of a better future of humankind. Elaborating the aims and objectives of MQI, he stated: "The primary aim of the Minhaj-ul-Quran International is to bring about a comprehensive and multidimensional change in the society which at the same time ends the academic and ideological deadlock and revive, once again, the exterminated moral and spiritual values of Islam, and also exalt the Muslim Umma to an admirable and respectful status among the comity of nations by a continuous struggle based on glorious foundation laid down by the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) on the universal principals of Love, Peace and Knowledge."

He based MQI on a comprehensive and practicable ideology and provided a detailed strategy to achieve the objectives of reviving the true values and principles of Islam, eliminating the social, cultural, ideological, moral, spiritual, economic, legal and political decline of Muslim Umma in particular and the whole mankind in general. The secret of achieving the goals of love, peace, harmony, universal brotherhood, justice, equity and prosperity lie only in the revival of these values. With these well-defined goals fixed, Shaykh-ul-Islam laid down four major objectives to achieve.

  • Da'wa and Propagation of True Islamic Teachings
  • Reformation of the Moral and Spiritual Affairs of Umma
  • Revival of Islamic Sciences
  • Promotion and Renaissance of Islam

The whole world is breathing heavily under the threats of terrorism and bloodshed. The idiosyncrasies of extremism, fanaticism and radicalism generate terrorism. Unfortunately, Islam is being presented as responsible for all terrorism around the world. MQI is taking practical measures to present to the world the true Islam through preaching inter-faith dialogue and harmony, striving for promoting culture of tolerance and moderation and promoting the cause of human rights, justice and equity at global level. MQI's Da'wa program encompasses all these aspects and gives a call for global peace, security, love and harmony among the communities inhabiting the earth. The ideology of MQI is introduced to the people through different Da'wa modes including call for affiliation with Allah Almighty, call for linking up with the Holy Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him), call for turning towards the Holy Qur'an, call for seeking knowledge, brotherhood and fraternity and collective struggle and call for consolidation.

Those who join the MQI and get ready to work for the MQI objectives are put into organizational structure. They become regular members and are tasked to discharge their Da'wa responsibility according to the instructions laid down by the central leadership. The work at this stage is successfully carried out by setting up branches and centres on national, provincial, district, city and town levels in and outside the country. Shaykh-ul-Islam has scientifically designed the intellectual growth of members and workers; they attend training sessions and camps where love for peace and justice, human dignity and equity is spiritually injected into their souls to bring them inner peace. That in turn brings about outer peace in society at large, through their pious and superbly moral behaviour towards their fellow human beings, irrespective of colour, race or creed. These training programs are centrally controlled under direct guidance from Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri. The members of MQI then translate their learning into action by taking an active part in the society and carrying out social and moral reform. Such a reformation focuses its advancement in the ideological, religious, educational, moral and cultural directions.

4. Minhaj Education Society (MES) and the Eradication of the Nurseries of Extremism

In order to eradicate the anti-social and inhuman tendencies, and fail the extremist elements in their radical schemes, he launched his struggle from the platform of Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI) to raise schools, colleges and universities that would engage the new generation in seeking modern scientific knowledge, keeping them from falling prey to the religious madrassas, the nurseries of extremism and the bigoted indoctrination. Setting up Minhaj Education Society to pursue these objectives, Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri developed over 600 schools and colleges in about a decade in the far-fetched areas that had madrassas diffusing extremism in tender minds. These educational institutions have not only imparted modern scientific education to hundreds of thousands of students, but have also saved them from the hurricane of extremism and radicalism. They are now the peaceful citizens adding their bit to the betterment of society in various fields of national life. In 1990s, he developed several colleges disseminating education in modern physical and social sciences and which culminated into the Minhaj University Lahore, chartered by the government, running collaboration programs with some universities abroad.

5. Minhaj University Lahore (MUL)

Minhaj University Lahore comprises a vast variety of faculties. For example, Economics & Management Sciences, Basic Sciences & Mathematics, Social Sciences & Humanities, Computer Sciences & Information Technology, Languages, Islamic Studies & Shariah, etc. It has a purpose-built campus with allied administrative and educational facilities like libraries, hostels, cafeteria, mosque, parking areas and playground. Programs at BS / MA / MSc / MS / MPhil and PhD level are offered in all the faculties.

6. Global Span of Struggle

His struggle, however, was not confined to Pakistan alone. He dedicated himself to the entire humanity. After successfully establishing the MQI set-ups in all the four provinces of Pakistan, with the membership statistics ever-rising to the heights of astonishment, we saw him in the year 1985 in the UAE, Norway and the USA setting up centres of MQI. It looked as if a magic prevailed. In a brief period of only five years, the mission of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri was seen getting beyond bounds, leaping the geographical distances and spreading over the globe. Today it is an organization with branches and centres all around the world, engaged in promoting peace and harmony among communities and reviving the spiritual bases of the worldly life in the light of Islamic teachings and human values like equality, justice and human dignity.

7. Post 9/11 Ventures

Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri founded Minhaj-ul-Quran International in order to counteract and eliminate religious extremism, the breeding ground for terrorism, pronounced it as inhumane, immoral and against the precepts of Islam. His condemnations of terrorist incidents have always been unequivocal. All along his journey on the road to peace, he has been awakening peoples' awareness towards peace as Islam's underlying truth, and has been warning against the extremists' deviating and misguiding stance on jihad and its allied aspects. In the post 9/11 years, he stretched his sinews against the plague and stood to the challenge. In the words of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri: "Over the last decade, this event together with subsequent atrocities has continued to colour the perception of the general public about Islam. In spite of statements and memorandums in condemnation of the terror, the voices of the 99% true peace loving Muslims have not been heard, but have been drowned out by the clamour and noise of the extremists and terrorists, causing the rest of mankind to wonder-how could the Muslims have been so silent, how are they totally non-committal about condemning the terrorists!"

8. FATWA, a Global Ruling against Terrorism and Suicide Bombings

Loud and clear, he launched his historic ventures in the post 9/11 years of tumultuous terrorism that has submersed the whole planet. He launched his historic FATWA against Terrorism and Suicide Bombings. According to BBC: "An influential Muslim scholar has issued a global ruling against terrorism and suicide bombing. Dr Tahir ul-Qadri, from Pakistan, says his 600-page judgment known as a fatwa, completely dismantles al-Qaeda's violent ideology. The scholar describes al-Qaeda as an 'old evil with a new name' that has not been sufficiently challenged. The scholar's movement is growing in the UK and has attracted the interest of policymakers and security chiefs. In his religious ruling, delivered in London, Dr Qadri says that Islam forbids the massacre of innocent citizens and suicide bombings. Although many scholars have made similar rulings in the past, Dr Qadri argued that his massive document goes much further by omitting 'ifs and buts' added by other thinkers. He said that it set out a point-by-point theological rebuttal of every argument used by al-Qaeda inspired recruiters."

The Time World observed: "This may be the fatwa the world has been waiting for. It was delivered, not in a mosque or a madrasah, nor in some dark corner of cyberspace, but in a wood-paneled hall opposite St. James' Park in London last week. Though issued just across the street from Britain's Foreign Office, its author, Shaikh Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, stressed that neither he nor Minhaj ul-Quran, his Pakistan-based organization, was supported in any way by any government. His voice and finger often rising sternly, the sheik delivered a far-reaching diatribe against terrorists and what he described as their wrongheaded concept of jihad. His fatwa: Terrorism is at all times, in all conditions, against Islam. The murders terrorists commit will send them, not to paradise, as often claimed, but to hell. '[Terrorists] are the heroes of hellfire,' he thundered. Their actions are not just unlawful but render terrorists kufr, or disbelievers, casting them outside the Islamic faith."

Manan Ahmed, professor of 'Islam in South and Southeast Asia' at the Institute for Islamic Studies in Berlin, calling the fatwa 'unprecedented' said: "This is a landmark theological study-a careful and systematic treatment of a thousand years of legal tradition dealing with armed resistance against the state, rules of engagement, aspects. The fatwa itself ... is categorically and comprehensively against terrorism in any form and for any cause."

9. Global Struggle for Interfaith Harmony

Shaykh-ul-Islam set up the Muslim Christian Dialogue Forum (MCDF) to tread the path to interfaith harmony and integration and hone the inter-community socio-cultural milieu. He remains in contact with the Bishops and Popes for liaison on his peace ventures. Under his guidance, the MQI chapters in over 90 countries in the world regularly and formally exchange visits to worship places of various faiths to promote rationality, coherence and amity among communities. For that, he allows the Christians to offer their prayers in the mosque, holds Mawlid al-Nabi celebrations in a church, prays with Sikhs in Gurdwaras, celebrates the Holi festival with Hindus and cuts the Christmas cakes with priests and the Christian community.

10. UN granted 'Special Consultative Status' to MQI

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has formally recognized and granted the 'Special Consultative Status' to Minhaj-ul-Quran International. The UN ECOSOC consultative status allows NGOs to attend UN conferences and meetings, submit written statements and reports, make oral interventions, and host panels in UN buildings. Minhaj-ul-Quran International was recommended by the Committee on NGOs at its 2011 regular session and formally recognized during the UN annual session.

This award of special status at UN speaks of the global stature of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri that has been bestowed upon him for his love for humanity and the exalted services he has rendered to the interfaith cohesion and inter-communal integration at international level.

11. The Span of Shaykh-ul-Islam's Peace Rhetoric

The promotion of peace and interfaith harmony, tolerance, religious moderation and integration and the establishment of Islam's distinct relevance to resolve all the problems and difficulties of modern age are the major objectives the Minhaj-ul-Quran International is striving hard to achieve from its very inception. Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri and the MQI hold the distinction of being the only individual and the only organization having a loud and clear commitment to realize these objectives. He is a powerful voice of love being heard around the globe, now in Oslo and Copenhagen, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Istanbul, and then in Toronto, Vancouver and New Jersey.

11.1 A voice traveling at the speed of light

This is the voice that has been echoing all around for the last four decades. This is Shaykh-ul-Islam's voice, educating the communities inhabiting the earth what Islam is and what a Muslim is assigned to do in this world. We are hearing it ever since the MQI was established. The voice has been getting ever stronger and affective, gaining new energies and creating new lights of hopes and pleasures in the hearts of its listeners. The one who listens to it gets spell-bound, fettered in the chains of love and peace, divested of fears and anxieties the hard worldly pursuits engender in the hearts of innocent human beings inhabiting the globe.

What is astonishing is that this voice, instead of traveling at sound speed, travels at the speed of light. We can only say such things figuratively, but in the case of Shaykh-ul-Islam's voice it has happened rather literally. The truth is that this voice is itself light and not merely a voice. It is the eternal light of love for mankind, love for peace and justice, love for human dignity, and, above all, love for God and His Beloved Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) and preceding Prophets (peace be upon them) whence love and peace springs.

12. The extent of his authorship and rhetoric

It is simply impossible to encompass his work and achievements in their entirety. He is a globally renowned jurist and expert of Islamic legal affairs and most eminent Islamic scholar. Shaykh-ul-Islam means the authority on Islam. He has authored about 1000 books out of which 596 books have already been published, while the rest of them are in different phases of production. He has delivered 7000 lectures in Urdu, English and Arabic on a wide range of subjects, available on different social media and video sites.

Through the printed page, he would educate Muslims as well as non-Muslims on relevance of Islamic teachings to contemporary and international issues. Through his rhetoric, he would warm up and cement the hearts of people together with mutual honour and dignity, love and justice, motivating them to sacrifice everything they can indiscriminately for the betterment of others. To attain to this objective, he follows the divine guidance in letter and spirit, and is seen taking divine flights to bring us superior visions from the realm of divinity. So he is a spiritual leader at the same time. He injects light into our hearts and souls. Then we feel elevated above the mundane worldly existence. His oratory flashes into us a guidance that sets in our eyes some contact lenses, giving our vision new power, new sight and new visibility inside us and around us. Then, it enables us to see what is right and what is wrong, what is superior and what is inferior, what should be acquired and how, and what should be denunciated and discarded. So Shaykh-ul-Islam is engaged in spreading love for God and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) day and night all over the world through remembrance sessions, other practices of Sufism and Mawlid al-Nabi Celebrations and special gatherings to invoke greetings and salutations on the Last Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him). And for this noble activity, he visits even the non-Muslim communities who hold him in high esteem for his respect and dignity for all the faiths and religions of humanity and for his stance on integration, cohesion and peaceful co-existence. He is preaching the love for God and the Messenger of Islam and the preceding Prophets (peace be upon them) , and inter-faith harmony and dialogue with the conviction that salvation of mankind lies in this love, the path that leads us to the destination of peace, restoration of human rights, dignity, equality, justice and emancipation.

That is Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri's mission of peace. He would make us pursue the goal by doing welfare of the destitute and the victimized, helping the poor and the ignorant, the sick and the disabled. He would lead us to educating the masses, taking light of awareness to them at their doorsteps, into their abodes, the external and visible ones and the internal and the invisible ones. He would pay special attention to more than the half of humanity, the womenfolk advocating them and fighting their case of rights, rousing them to activities that ensure a peaceful and enjoyable life, based on higher morality and spiritual benefits. And he would bridge distances between communities through inter-faith harmony and noble practices of ecumenism, religious tolerance and cultural integrity-the steps to buy peace and buoy human values. The communities call him the ambassador of peace, love and justice, pursuing the salvation of mankind through Islam and its spiritual teachings and divine practices.

13. An Awe-inspiring View of His Intellectual Output

Dr Tahir ul-Qadri has never taken any time out of his striving for peace at global level. If we trace the chronology of his events and activities over the globe, we find him engaged in his peace venture round the clock. We can trace it down, but that requires volumes to produce. We find him touring the US addressing American Muslim Council and the Leaders of the Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Bhudda communities and other religions thronging the venue, hearing him on "Islam and Peace". We see him delivering interviews, proposing solutions to establish peace and eliminate the plague of extremism, saying: extremism, religious conservatism and sectarianism provides the ground where the seed of terrorism is sown and nurtured. We see him expressly demonstrating the dynamics of terrorism and addressing the think tanks of Europe and US explaining to them Jihad, the perception and reality. His audiences comprise senior scholars, doctors, professors, engineers, policy makers and opinion leaders, the US-government officials, cadets from US Army, Navy and Air Force as well as academicians, policy makers and representatives of various organizations and agencies besides millions of people signing his declaration of peace. He is heard the world around over decades ever since he established MQI and launched his dynamic movement to awaken awareness amongst the humanity entire about the true identity of Islamic faith, the teachings of Islam, the permanent values enshrined in the Qur'an, the cause of altruism, human welfare and engaging Minhaj-ul-Quran forums in eliminating ignorance, poverty and disease from the surface of the earth and, above all, pursuing the cause of enduring peace on the globe and bringing about integration and unity amongst the world communities through love, sacrifice, tolerance, human dignity and interfaith harmony. We hear him all over the globe, e.g., at Wembley Arena, UK; Warwick University, UK; World Economic Forum in Geneva; Historic Mawlid al-Nabi conferences; Mississauga Muslim Community Center Toronto, Canada; US-Islamic World Forum, Washington DC; The Centre for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution (CRDC) at George Mason University; Nasir Bagh Lahore, Pakistan; Institute for Middle East Studies at the Marmara University, Istanbul; Public Awareness Rally in Liaqat Bagh, Rawalpindi and Minar-e-Pakistan Lahore; Islamic Cultural Centre and 'Kutch' city of Gujrat, India; Peace and Integration Council of North America-PICNA; University of South Carolina, Columbia; Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York; Itikaf City, Lahore; The Danish Ethnic Youth Council, Denmark, etc. There is no corner of the world that his surge of intellectual awakening has not visited to put across the message of Islam, peace, justice, love and harmony.

In April, 2019 he addressed OIC Summit Conference held in Riyadh, KSA on "The Role of Education in Prevention of Terrorism and Extremism" emphasizing that purposeful educational system is central to construction of moderate society. He briefed the summit on the efforts and role of Mihaj-ul-Quran International in countering and eliminating extremism and terrorism and extended to all the OIC countries all possible assistance and cooperation in putting the MQI plan into practice.

The intellectual properties of Shaykh-ul-Islam towards the bright future of humankind are, thus, limitless, inexhaustible and inestimable. His intellectual activities are colossal and diverse, while the variety of his audiences beggar description. He remains behind his targets with all his vigour and energies, moves the people with his innovative ideas and galvanizing rhetoric, takes them along on his voyage to the destination of peace and harmony, and attempts to make everyone join him in the excursion for peace indiscriminately-be he a Christian, a Jew, a Hindu, a Sikh, a Buddhist or the believer of any of the religions of humanity-in his love for the fairy of peace.

14. Shaykh-ul-Islam's Immense Erudition

Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri is a living model of profound classical knowledge, intellectual enlightenment, practical wisdom, pure spirituality, love, harmony and humanism. He is well known for his ardent endeavour to strengthen bonds among people, by bringing them together through tolerance, dialogue, integration and education. He successfully bridges the past with his image of the future and finds convincing solutions for contemporary problems. He has been teaching Hadith, Tafsir, Fiqh, Theology, Sufism, Sirah, Islamic philosophy and many other rational and traditional sciences to thousands of people, including Ulama, scholars, Shuyukh, students, intellectuals and academics in the east and the west.

A prolific author and researcher, Shaykh-ul-Islam has authored around 1000 books, of which 596 have been published, and the rest of them are in the production process. An unrivalled orator and speaker, he has delivered over 6000 lectures (in Urdu, English and Arabic), on a wide range of subjects, which are available on cassette, CD, DVD formats as well as online.

His printed works include Urdu and English translation of the Holy Qur'an, Irfan al-Qur'an and The Glorious Qur'an besides his works on the Qur'anic exegesis, hadith compilation and the science of hadith, works on Islamic beliefs and doctrines, biography (sira) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him), Islamic law and jurisprudence, Islamic political and economic systems, Islamic science of mysticism and spiritualism, human rights and modern sciences, and numerous miscellaneous works.

15. The Encyclopaedias of the Qur'an and Sunna

In 2018-2019 Shaykh-ul-Islam launched his historic and colossal research work in the form of eight-volume Qur'anic Encyclopaedia both in Urdu and English. The whole intellectual world has greatly appreciated it, and paying homage to the scholarly endeavours of his eminence Shaykh-ul-Islam, regard it as a guarantee of the emancipation of humanity because it has made easy consultation of the Holy Scripture in regard to any problem we come across. Another gigantic research project in the form of Encyclopaedia of Sunna will enshrine over thousands of verses and hadiths.

16. Finale

The stride of his erudite activity does not terminate; he has also digitalized his entire scholastic work spread, without exaggeration, over not less than a million printed pages. He is, at the same time, working on the exegesis of the Qur'an, which is long awaited by the common reader as well as the researchers and scholars all over the world. We ambitiously pray for his long life and sound health for he is, in fact, a great blessing of Almighty Allah and His Exalted Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) for the whole of Muslim Umma in particular and the humanity entire, in general. We love him and follow him ardently, for he is the Qutb of his time, without any doubt.
