All You Need Is Muhammad's Vision for Peace

Ali Akbar Alvi

The world today is in dire need of peace than ever before because materialism, sensuality and lack of contentment have taken away peace from every living creature. World in general and Muslim societies especially from Libya to Pakistan have become victims to terrorism, destruction, disappointment and uncertainty. Target killing has become a culture, and life of a common man with no basic facilities of life has become really difficult. Dacoits, robbers rule every corner of the state. Even the educational institutes long for enlightenment, refuge and solidarity.

The soul reason behind this moral emptiness, social restlessness, political instability is that we have forgotten Islamic concept of peace. Linguistically speaking, Islam means peace, comfort and success Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran : enter into the realm of peace completely. It is imperative to become peaceful and inspire others to demonstrate peace through both verbal and non-verbal means. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) said the real Muslim is the one from whose hands and tongue all other Muslims feel safe (Bukhair, 6 : 1). He said : A Muslim is the brother of other Muslim, neither does he be unjust to him nor does he hand him over to another unjust" (Bukhari, 335 : 1) A Muslim is not only a source of peace for his brother Muslim but he is also a source of peace for the whole humanity. The Holy Prophet said : By Lord, he is not a true believer, he is not a true believer, he is not a true believer…he was asked, who? He said the one from whom his/her neighbour is not safe (Bukhari, 889 : 2). The word neighbour is general not specific and does not refer to only a Muslim neighbour. The Holy Prophet said : The whole mankind is the family of Allah Almighty.

The real Muslim is the one who does bear good character, ensures the safety of life of his fellow beings, and establishes peace in the society he dwells in. it means if a person offers five time prayer in a day, keep fast, does perform pilgrimage every year, offers tahajud prayer, travels from one corner of the land to the other to preach Islam is not a true believer until he becomes fountain of peace. All these good deeds cannot protect him from the pangs of hell fire until he ensures peace for the society he lives in.

The Holy Prophet from his childhood till his last sermon was very emphatic to build peace in the society. Even in the pre-prophethood era that, in collaboration with the like-minded people, He had constituted an agreement namely Halful-Fazool to bring peace to Makkah, to provide safe passage to the travellers, to help the subjugated whether locals or outsiders, and to stop powerful from tyrannising the masses.

The Holy Prophet told the companions to migrate to Abyssinya for the safity of their life and to avoid possible blooshed. Hazrat Jafar (RA) portayed the Holy Prophet as a Prophet of peace and compassion before the king in the following words : "O King, we were a people in a state of ignorance and immorality, worshipping idols, eating the flesh of dead animals, committing all sorts of abomination and shameful deeds, breaking the ties of kinship, treating guests badly and the strong among us exploited the weak. We remained in this state until Allah sent us a Prophet, one of our own people whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness and integrity were well-known to us. He commanded us to uphold truthfulness, to keep our promises, to be kind to our relatives, to be helpful to our neighbors, to cease all forbidden acts, to abstain from bloodshed, to avoid obscenities and false witness.

When the Arabs decided to assassinate the Holy Prophet Their motivation for this move, apart from recognizing him as the Prophet, the trustworthy, and the best in conduct in Mecca, was to bring peace and security between the Khazraj and Aws , Allah Almighty inspired the people from Madina to come, accept Islam and Invite the Holy Prophet to migrate to madina. Their motivation for this move, apart from recognizing him as the Prophet, the trustworthy, and the best in conduct in Mecca, was to bring peace and security between the Khazraj and Aws.

The Holy Prophet , after arriving in Madina, worked for integration, peace and harmony of the society. He did not snub the identity of any tribe and religion but validate their identity. For example, the jews shall maintain their own religion and the Muslim theirs. Loyality is a protection against treachery. The close friends of jews are as themselves. None of them shall go out on a military expedition except with the permission of Muhammad , but he shall not be prevented from taking revenge for a wound.

Besdies the Jews, in year 10 A.H, the Holy Prophet met a delegation of sixty Christians from Najran. The Holy Prophet gave them a warm reception, allowed them to pray in the mosque, and discussed the things in friendly environment. They discussed the doctrine including the nature of God, and he replied them by reciting Sura Ikhlas and Ayat ul Kursi. Inspite of some fundamental differences, they reached an agreement which provided religious and administrative autonomy for non-Muslim citizens of the Islamic State. The successors of the Holy Prophet adhered to the founding principles of this treaty in managing the affairs of non-Muslim subjects throughout the centuries.

Early in 628 A.D., the Holy Prophet decided to proceed to Mecca to perform Hajj. About 1400 companions including Abu Bakr, Umer, Ali accompanied him. They did not take any arm with them. The Holy Prophet Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to inform Quraish and get permission from them but they did not allow and Hazrat Uthman returned from Makka along with some emisseries from the Quraish. After some further discussion, they reached to an agreement. Though many companions especially Hazrat Umer (may Allah be pleased with him) objected but The Holy Prophet wanted to promote peace rather than promoting conflicts : the terms are :

1. There was to be a cease-fire between the Muslims and the Quraish for a period of ten years.

2. If any tribe wanted to enter into treaty with the Muslims it could do so, and whoever wished to enter a covenant with the Quraish was likewise free to do so.

3. If anyone from the Quraish came to the Muslims without the permission of his guardian, he was to be returned to the Quraish. On the other hand if a Muslim sought refuge with the Quraish, he was not to be delivered to the Muslims.

4. The Muslims were to withdraw that year without performing the pilgrimage. They were free to perform the Hajj the following year when they could stay in Makkah for three days.

Even during the last speech , he said "O People! just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds.

He further said, All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

We can only build a peaceful society just treading the path of the holy Prophet . His life from childhood till his last breaths is a perfect role model for the people of all races, colours and creeds. He brought the people out of darkness and led them to light, wisdom, peace and prosperity.
